The more things change, the more they stay the same

Our first week back to school is over, and while some things have stayed the same, so many things are different.

I’ve been thinking about where I was last year at this time compared to this year. Last year, I had just moved seven hours away from my family and friends to a brand new place I knew nearly nothing about. I didn’t know anyone here, and my cat was not happy that I had moved him away from the house he loved, but he was discovering that there were lots of places for him to watch the birds at our new place. I had no idea what to expect in my classes, I didn’t feel like I would be able to do any of my assignments right, and I was pretty sure I didn’t know anything about anything and I was going to fail all my classes.

Fast forward to this year, and things are very different. I have some wonderful friends here, and my cat and I have both adjusted to life in Williamsburg. I only have to use my GPS once in a while, not every day. I know mostly what to expect at work and in class, and this year I know that I can survive without failing anything.

But some things are still the same. My cohort is starting practicum this year, and since mine is in Richmond, I again have a new city to learn and new people to meet, and I don’t really know what to expect. We have different classes with different teachers and different things to learn. There’s still so much we don’t know, and I know that by this time next year, I’ll have learned so many things that I don’t know now.

Right now, I’m excited to see what challenges this year will bring, and I know that I will be ready to meet them.
